Marty Berman was born in Newark and raised in South Orange. He attended Columbia High School and played for NJSIAA Hall of Famer, Gene Chyzowych. He met his wife Lori through Seton Hall Prep colleague, Peter Butler. They have two sons, Matty and Luke. Marty currently coaches with Matty and his brother-in-law, David Snyder.
 
Marty took the reigns of the Seton Hall Prep soccer program in 1986 after serving as an assistant under Pete Butler for six seasons. In his first season, they won the NJISAA Prep School "A" Division title. Marty his since amassed 5 Non-Public A state titles, 8 Non-Public A North titles, 9 Essex County Tournament championships, 9 Super Essex Conference titles (2009-present), 6 Iron Hills Conference titles (1986-2009), and 1 NJSIAA Northeast Non-Public Region title. Over his 38-year career his record stands at 566-200-67. Marty was named the East Region Coach of the Year by the United Soccer Coaches in 2009, and he has also been honored on the state and county levels in the past by The Star-Ledger, the Schools and Colleges Officials Association and the State Coaches Association.
 
Most recently in 2024 following the 2023 State Title campaign, Marty was named the United Soccer Coach NATIONAL Non-Public Boys HS Soccer Coach of the year, a national award granted at their annual banquet in Anaheim California. He was honored alongside legends of the game including former United States Womens National Team World Club Champion Jill Ellis, Dr. Joe Machnik, Lincoln Phillips, and April Heinrichs.
 
In addition to his prowess on the soccer field, Marty was the head coach of the freshman basketball program at The Prep since 1981, accumulating 705 victories. An assistant on the varsity staff alongside NJSIAA Hall of Famer Bob Farrell, he also was a key member of numerous state, county, and conference titles.
 
Prior to joining the Seton Hall Prep family in 1980, Marty wrote for the Star-Ledger covering high school sports in addition to a stint with the American Soccer League.
 
After the American Soccer League folded, Marty began at Seton Hall Prep as a dedicated English teacher in the fall of 1980. He has since taught freshman English, Creative Writing, and Sports Literature.
 
During is tenure at The Prep, Marty has been inducted into the Seton Hall Prep Hall of Fame, and honored by the Fathers Club with the Thomas A. Renyolds Award, given each year to a member of the SHP community who exemplifies the Christian tradition in every facet of his or her relationships with their fellowman; has consistently shown themselves to be devoted to the welfare of the student body at Seton Hall Prep, and has consistently remained an active member of The Prep community, giving of themselves and their commitment beyond the usual degree of involvement.
 
In 1988, he received the Seton Hall Prep Msgr. Tuohy Award, bestowed upon an individual who has made substantial and consistent contributions to the athletic department. In 2016, 2022, and 2024, Coach Berman organized an event in which players would interact with people with severe physical and learning disabilities.
